Just when it looked like the Winnipeg Blues would take another 1 goal loss, they found a way to win.
Paul Bonar completed his hat-trick in overtime with a shot from the point that found it's way behind Terrier netminder Kirk Coswell, and the Blues won their first game of the showcase weekend 4-3.
The score was 2-1 Terriers after the first, with all 3 goals scored on the powerplay.
The 2nd was the Blues best period, but they couldn't find the back of the net even though they outshot the Terriers 18-6 in the period.
In the 3rd, the Blues tied it on a point shot by Bonar that hit a stick and bounced over Coswell to even things up.
The lead was short lived after Shaq Merasty made a great pass across to Brendan Harms who had a tap in to give the Terriers a 3-2 lead.
The Blues had many chances to tie the game, but hit a post and a crossbar, and it once again looked like it wasn't going to be the Blues night.
With just under 2 minutes to go, Evan Gravenor was called for hooking. But the Terrier powerplay lasted just 8 seconds before Andrew Wiebe was also called for the same thing.
The teams seemed poised to play 4 on 4 for the remainder of the game, but with 18 seconds left Adam Robson took a tripping penalty, giving the Blues a short powerplay.
With Martyniuk on the bench, the Blues threw everything at the net, and with three seconds left Andrew Hewitt picked up the puck through the scramble and roofed it, notching the game at 3.
The Blues would begin overtime with the man advantage, and kept the Terriers locked in their own zone and after three very nice glove saves by Coswell, Bonar would end it with a shot from the point that Coswell couldn't see, and the Blues skated away with their second win of the season 4-3.
The win improves the Blues record to 2-5-2-2, while the Terriers fall to 5-3-2-0.
Next action for the Blues is Saturday night when they'll face the 5-4-1-0 Dauphin Kings.

Blues Make Some Moves
Showcase weekend kicked off tonight at the MTS Ice Plex, with the Portage Terriers beating Neepawa 2-1 in a shoot out.
There was also some action off the ice, as the Winnipeg Blues made a couple of trades.
The Blues acquired defenceman Ryan Breen (1992) from Waywayseecappo for future considerations. Breen has no points and two penalty minutes in 2 games this season with the Wolverines.
As well, the Blues traded Colin Mospanchuk (1993) to the Portage Terriers. In return, the Blues acquire 1991 forward Dylan Kelly. Kelly suited up for 6 games this season with the Terriers, notching 2 assists and 12 penalty minutes.
And it won't take long for those 2 players to face their former teams, as the two teams meet tonight (Friday) at 7:00 at the Ice Plex.
It's a great weekend for hockey lovers who can come down to the Ice Plex and see every team in the MJHL battling it out during the 3 day long showcase.
Action kicks off at 3pm.

Wolverines Slip By Blues
It wasn't the way the Blues wanted to come back after a spirited win in Dauphin, and the Waywayseecappo Wolverines won their first ever game at the MTS Ice Plex, by downing the Blues 4-3.
Any time you have to kill off 10 penalties in a game, it's not a good thing, and the Wolverines capitalized 3 times with the extra man.
Jason Gardiner continued to put the puck in the net for the Blues adding a pair in the loss. He now takes over the league lead with 11 goals in nine games.
Andrew Hewitt notched his 2nd of the year.
For the Wolverines, Ryan Duhaime, Braeden Raiwet, Paul Van De Velde, and Shane Goodrunning all found the back of the net. Van De Velde also added a pair of assists for a 3 point night.
Charlie Pogue stopped 20 of 24 shots in the loss, while Brett Gagnon made 18 saves for the win.
The Blues now have 5 days off before the Showcase Weekend which will take place next weekend (October 7-9) at the MTS Ice Plex.
The Blues will face Portage on Friday night, puck drop set for 7:00. On Saturday, they'll face the Dauphin Kings. Again, puck drop goes at 7:00.

Blues Impressive In Dauphin
It's been a long time coming, but the Winnipeg Blues finally have their first win of the season. And what makes it even more impressive is the fact they did it on the road against the defending MJHL Champion Dauphin Kings in front of an announced crowd of 1233.
A four goal outburst in the third spurred the Blues to a 7-3 win.
Jason Gardiner opened the scoring just over 5 minutes in for the Blues, notching his 9th of the season..
Tyler Gaudry replied for the Kings and the 2 teams were tied after the opening period.
In the second, Adam Stoykewych scored his first of two short handed markers in the game, beating Kings netminder Brett Willows to give the Blues the lead.
Ben Morgan would make it 3-1 on the powerplay at 14:22 with his second of the year.
The Kings would get within one late in the period when Chris Daniels put the puck behind Charlie Pogue, but the Blues would head to the dressing room with a 3-2 lead.
In the 3rd, Morgan scored his second of the game just 34 seconds in and the Blues didn't look back.

Saints Down Blues
The rough start to the Blues season got a little rougher last night as the Winnipeg Saints downed the Blues 6-0 in front of 225 fans at the MTS Ice Plex.
It was the Blues second straight loss to the Saints, and 8th in a row overall.
The Saints struck early in the first, as the teams played a little four on four. Paul Crane would snipe a shot past Blues goaltender Brett Martyniuk to open the scoring.
Four minutes later Cole Pruden would make it 2-0. That was his first of 4 points on the night.
In the second, a period where the Blues needed to score first, it was the Saints who would strike early. Pruden would notch his second of the game on a nice pass from Kyle Bodnaruk, and it was 3-0.
The Blues would have their chance to get back into the game midway through the period when Kyle Stephenson would get a checking from behind penalty, unsportsmanlike, and a game misconduct. On the ensuing 4 minute powerplay, the Blues couldn't get the puck behind Saints netminder Michael Deslauriers, who was stellar all night.
The Saints killed that off then went to the powerplay themselves, and they'd capitalize when Tim Hayduk's shot from the point took a deflection and ended up on Richard Little's stick in front of the net. Little had a tap in, and the Saints were up 4-0 after two periods.
In the third, much the same for the Blues. They created a few chances, but just couldn't put the puck in the net. Midway through the third Shane Gingera found the puck on his stick about 6 feet in front of Martyniuk, and he made no mistake putting a shot just under the bar making it 5-0.
Jordan Davies would round out the scoring for the Saints after he was left alone in the slot, and fired a beautiful shot over the right arm of Martyniuk.
6-0 Saints.
The Blues now fall to 0-4-2-2 (4pts) on the season and are desperately looking to get into the win column. There next chance to do so is tonight (Friday), when they head to Credit Union Place in Dauphin to take on the 4-2-1-0 (9pts) Kings.

Blues Struggles Continue
The first 7 games are in the books, and the Blues are still looking for their first win. The Blues fell to the Winnipeg Saints 4-1 last night in St. Adolphe.
After a scoreless but penalty filled first period, the Saints tallied three goals in the 2nd. Paul Crane, Kyle Bodnaruk, Shane Gingera were the goal scorers for the Saints.
Brad Olynyk would add a powerplay goal late in the 3rd to round out the scoring for the Saints.
Dustin Bruyere would notch the Blues only marker early in the 3rd, but Saints netminder Brent Wolfe would shut the door the rest of the way, stopping 31 of 32 shots for the win.

Blues Still Looking For Elusive First Win
Overtime and shootouts continue to be the Blues nemisis, as they once again went to the extra frame and came away with only a single point.
Connor Stephenson scored his first of the season, Adam Stoykewych notched his second of the year, and Jason Gardiner continued to find the back of the net for the Blues, scoring his 6th and 7th goals of the year to take over the lead league. Gardiner has one more than Winklers Matt Loopkey.
Angus Klassen added a hat trick for the Kings, who now improve to 4-1-0-0 on the year. The Blues fall to 0-1-2-2, and are still looking for that elusive first win.
They'll have a chance tonight when they head to Winkler to face the 2-1-0-0 Flyers. The Flyers beat the Blues 7-6 in overtime last Tuesday night at the MTS Ice Plex in the only other meeting between the 2 clubs this season.
Puck drop is set for 7:30 tonight.
