Blues Woes Continue

There's that old saying when it rains it pours, and right now the Winnipeg Blues are in the middle of a heavy deluge.

In their third of 10 straight games on the road, the Blues travelled up the Yellowhead to Neepawa to face the Natives.

And thanks to a five goal second period outburst, Neepawa skated away with a 5-1 win handing Winnipeg their 5th straight loss,

After a scoreless first period, Neepawa came out firing, and outshot the Blues 25-9 in the middle frame with five of those shots finding their way behind Charlie Pogue.

Winnipeg would score early in the third period with Connor Cleverley scoring his 6th of the year, but that's as close as the Blues would come, as their record now falls to 9-20-3-5 on the season.

Winnipeg has one more game before they stop for the Christmas break.  On Sunday night the Blues travel to Winkler to face the 19-14-2-2 Flyers.

Rough Start To Blues 10 Game Road Trip

We're only half way through the season, but the Winnipeg Blues are in the "must win" type of games.

On Sunday night, Winnipeg fell 6-4 to the Dauphin Kings at the MTS Ice Plex.  That is the last time they'll play at home until January 14th.   They'll be on the road for 10 straight, and it's safe to say they need more wins than losses on this road trip or they won't be seeing the post season.

The road trip got off to a tough start in Portage on Tuesday night, as the Blues were blanked 4-0 by the Terriers.

Brendan Harms led the way for Portage with a hat-trick, and Brett Martyniuk did what he could in net for the Blues, as Portage outshot Winnipeg 45-26.

On Wednesday night Winnipeg faced the Steinbach Pistons in a penalty filled affair in Steinbach.

The Pistons scored three powerplay goals in the first period, and seven times overall with the man advantage as they skated away with a 9-4 win.

Adam Stoykewych had a pair, while Brett Stovin and Paul Bonar both added singles in the loss.

The Blues went 1-9 on the powerplay, while Steinbach was 7-12.

The loss was Winnipegs fourth in a row, and 7th in their last eight games, and now sit in 6th in the Addison, two points behind fifth place Steinbach.

The Blues have two games left before the Christmas break.  On Friday night they'll head to Neepawa to face the Natives, while on Sunday they travel to Winkler for a date with the Flyers.

Kings Top Blues

The Dauphin Kings continued their strong play, winning their 10th in 11 games as they downed the Winnipeg Blues 6-4 at the MTS Ice Plex.

The first period saw each team trade chances until Justin Minoletti picked up a loose puck at center, skated over the Kings line, and fired a shot past Dauphin Netminder Ryan Bembridge giving the Blues a 1-0 lead.

It would stay that way until late in the period when the Kings Bryn Chyzyk would tie things up, sending the teams to their dressing rooms tied at 1.

In the second, Kings captain Shane Luke would get his first of two on the night, as he took a great feed from Chyzyk at the side of the net with the Blues down 2 men, and put the puck behind a helpless Charlie Pogue who had no chance, giving the Kings the lead.

Jeff Borse would tie things up for Winnipeg as he picked up a rebound in front of the Kings net and slipped home his 10th of the year, once again notting things up.

Josh Daley and Luke would each score and give Dauphin a 4-2 lead midway through the 2nd, but the Blues kept battling and Evan Gravenor was rewarded for going to the front of the net, as he found a loose puck and put it in the cage, getting the Blues within one.

Before the period was out Winnipeg would tie things up on a great three way passing play which was finished off by Dylan Kelly, and the two teams would head to the third tied at 4.

In the third, the Blues were called for three penalties in the first 2:18 seconds, and killed them all off, keeping things locked.

Then with just under 5 minutes to play, a scramble ensued in front of the Blues net, and Kings Jesse Sinatynski picked up a loose puck and put a perfect shot in the top corner, giving Dauphin a 5-4 lead.

Kyle Johnson added an empty net goal, and the Kings took home a 6-4 win.

Dauphin finished 3-9 on the powerplay, while the Blues were 0-6.

It wasn't the best officiated game i have seen this year that's for sure.

It's now time to hit the road for the Blues, who will play their next 10 games away from the MTS Ice Plex, beginning on Tuesday night in Portage where they'll face the Terriers.

I'd also like to thank Dauphin Kings play by play man Kevin Jeffrey for letting me come and do color with him.  It was a great time, he's great at calling the games, and i look forward to doing that again.

Blues Get Much Needed Win Against Blizzard

The Winnipeg Blues snapped a 3 game losing streak last night as they downed the OCN Blizzard 4-3 at the MTS Ice Plex.

It looked like it was going to be another long night for the Blues when Colin Fay opened the scoring less than 2 minutes into the opening frame.

But Winnipeg kept chipping away and were rewarded when Jeff Borse netted his 10th of the year to even things up.

Dylan Kelly would give the Blues a 2-1 lead late in the period when the teams headed to the dressing rooms.

In the second, Dustin Bruyere would score his first goal against his former team, tying things up for the Blizzard.  Bruyere was dealt to OCN earlier in the week in exchange for Brett Stovin.

The Blues would regain their one goal lead before the period would run out when Paul Bonar would find the back of the net with his 12th of the year.   Bonar leads all MJHL defenseman in goals (12) and tied for points (26) after thirty one games this season.

In the third Evan Gravenor notched the eventual game winner early in the period, giving the Blues a 4-2 lead.

The Blizzard would make things interesting after Guillaume Vallee put the puck behind Brett Martyniuk on the power play, but the Blues would shut the door after that, skating away with a much needed 4-3 win.

A night earlier, the Blues fell 7-5 against the Winnipeg Saints.

The Saints scored three in the first 2:23 of the second period, and that would turn out to be the difference as the two teams would trade goals the rest of the way.

Adam Stoykewych, Connor Cleverley, Jeff Borse, Jason Gardiner and Evan Gravenor all scored for the Blues in a losing cause.

Winnipeg is now off until next Thursday, as they get set to host the 19-8-3-1 Portage Terriers.  Puck drop is set for 7:30 at the Ice Plex.

Blues Make Some Moves

The Winnipeg Blues have been off since last Friday night, but the coaching staff have been busy making some moves.

Blues head coach and GM Don Macgillivray announced that Winnipeg has traded Forward Ben Morgan and futures to the Notre Dame Hounds (SJHL) in exchange for 20 year old forward Austin Lauder.

In 25 games this season with the Hounds, Lauder has 4 goals, 10 assists and 17 PIM's.

The Blues also sent 18 year old forward Dustin Bruyere and the rights 1994 defenseman Nick Bruyere to OCN.  In return the Blues acquired 1994 forward Brett Stovin.

Winnipeg also sent futures to the Blizzard for the MJHL list rights of 1992 Forward Ryan Elliot and futures to Powell River for the CHA rights to Elliot.

The Blues would like to thank Ben and Dustin for all their contributions to the team.

The Blues would also like to welcome Austin, Brett and Ryan to the organization.

Flyers Drop Blues

The Winkler Flyers continued their dominance over Winnipeg last night, and collected their 4th straight win over the Blues 5-2 last night at the MTS Ice Plex.

There was no scoring in the first period, but in the second Winkler started to take the game over.

Jake Rombach opened the scoring early, 1:29 in to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead.

Sam Benson quickly made it 2-0, firing a shot past Brett Martyniuk just a 1:12 after Rombachs goal.

It would stay that way until late in the period when Matt Loopkey would score his first of a pair on the evening with only 21 seconds left, and give Winkler a three goal lead heading to the third.

The Blues looked to make a comeback, and needed a goal quick, and that's just what they got.   Jeff Borse put home his 8th of the year, getting the Blues within 2.

It was short lived though, as 17 seconds later Jory Mullin would regain the 3 goal advantage for Winkler, once again taking the momentum away from Winnipeg.

Borse would get his second of the night late in the period, but it wouldn't be enough as Winkler left the Ice Plex with a 5-2 win.

With the loss, the Blues record now sits at 8-14-2-5, and sit in fifth in the Addison, just one point up on the Steinbach Pistons, who they'll face tonight.   Puck drop is set for 7:30.

Blues Hang On In A Wild One Against Wayway

It looked more like a football score than a hockey score, but in the end, the Winnipeg Blues scored one more than the Waywayseecappo Wolverines in an 8-7 win at the MTS Ice Plex on Saturday night.

Paul Van De Velde would open the scoring in the first for the Wolverines, collecting his first of a 5 point night midway through the period.

The Blues would add the next two thanks to Evan Gravenor collecting his 18th and 19th of the year.  Before the period would end Wayway would tie things up on a goal by Ryan Duhaime and things were knotted at 2 after the opening frame.

Van De Velde would once again be the first to score in the second period, just over 5 minutes in, but the Blues would pot three unanswered from Paul Bonar, Connor Cleverely and Jeff Borse to take a 5-3 lead into the third period.

And the goals kept coming early and often in the third period.  Shane Goodrunning scored eleven seconds in, putting the Wolverines within one.

Then another three unanswered by the Blues, this time it was Gravenor completing the hat-trick, Adam Stoykewych, and Dylan Kelly all lighting the lamp.

That made it 8-4 with under four minutes left in the third period.

But the game was far from over.   The Wolverines stormed back, with Duhaime scoring his second of the game, with just over a minute to go.

Twenty five seconds later Matt Malenstyn would get Wayway within two getting the puck behind Blues netminder Brett Martyniuk, making the score 8-6 with forty nine seconds left.

Seven seconds later Van De Velde completed his hat-trick, and the Wolverines were within a goal of completing a miracle comeback.

But the Blues would hang on and skate away with a 8-7 win.

Other notables.  Blues Jason Gardiner had a great night, collecting 4 assists in the win.
Wolverines Brett Pinkerton also collected 4 helpers on the night.

The Blues record now improves to 8-13-2-5 on the year, and 2-1-0-0 over the Wolverines this season.

Next action for the Blues is Thursday, November 25th when they'll welcome the Winkler Flyers to the MTS Ice Plex.   Winnipeg is 0-2-1-0 against the Flyers so far this season.

Puck Drop is set for 7:30

Blues Let 2 Points Slip Away Against Steelers

The Winnipeg Blues let a 3-0 third period lead slip away, and fell 4-3 in a shootout to the Selkirk Steelers at the MTS Ice Plex.

The final score isn't surprising, as 4 of the 5 meetings between the two clubs this season have ended 4-3.  But this one is going to be a tough one to swallow.

Building off their 7-2 win over Neepawa back on Tuesday, the Blues came out firing in the first period and managed to put 2 pucks behind Joey Rewucki, who was stellar yet again against the Blues.   Paul Bonar and Evan Gravenor each lit the lamp as the Blues outshot the Steelers 23-3 in the opening frame.

In the 2nd, Jeff Borse scored his 5th of the season, giving the Blues a 3-0 lead heading into the third.

Everything seemed to be looking in the Blues favor, as they had a 39-13 shot advantage and 3-0 goal advantage heading into the third period.

But thanks to the goaltending of Rewucki, the Steelers clawed their way back into the game with a pair of goals 37 seconds apart from Cody Waterman and Joel Ridgeway.   Then midway through the third Dylan Heide would tie the game and send it to overtime.

Once again, the Blues outshot Selkirk 15-10 in the third, and 54-23 overall after 3 periods.

In overtime it was all Winnipeg, but they couldn't solve Rewucki, outshooting the Steelers 5-0.

In the shootout, all 3 Blues shooters would also be stumped by Rewucki, and Joel Ridgeway would be the only scorer, giving the Steelers a 4-3 shootout win.

That's the third 4-3 shootout win by the Steelers over the Blues this season.  They also have a 4-3 overtime win, and a 5-3 win.

The Blues have outshot the Steelers in each game, except one where they were tied, but have come up on the short end of the scoreboard.

In 5 games this season, the Blues have outshot Selkirk 207-144, but their record against the Steelers falls to 0-1-1-3.

The Blues will return to action this Saturday night when they'll face the Waywayseecappo Wolverines at the MTS Ice Plex.   The Blues won the last meeting between to two clubs 7-3 in Wayway back on November 13th.

Puck drop is set for 7:30.

Blues Offence Comes Alive In Neepawa

For the 2nd time in their last three games, the Winnipeg Blues put 7 goals up on the board.   And for the 2nd time in their last three games, they came away with the win.

The second period for the Blues has been less than stellar so far this season, but last night in Neepawa it was the catalyst, as Winnipeg scored 4 times en route to a 7-2 win over the Natives.

The Blues led 3-1 after the first period, thanks to 2 goals from Brett Harvie, and another from Paul Bonar.

In the second period, Adam Stoykewych put home a pair, Patrick Henderson got a single, and newcomer Justin Remillard scored his first as a Blue after being acquired last week from La Ronge rounding out the scoring in the period, and giving Winnipeg a 7-1 lead after two periods.

Neepawa would get the only marker in the third, a shorthanded goal by Daniel Adams, but that would be it as the Blues improved their record to 7-13-2-4 on the year.

Next action for the Blues is Thursday night at the MTS Ice Plex when they'll look for their first win over the leagues top team, the Selkirk Steelers.  So far this season the Blues are 0-1-1-2 against their division rivals.

Puck drop is set for 7:30.

Up And Down Weekend For The Blues

It was an up and down weekend for the Winnipeg Blues.

On Saturday night, the Blues headed to Waywayseecappo to face the Wolverines, and put together a great effort in a 7-4 win.

Seven different goal scorers found the back of the net for Winnipeg in the win.  Jeff Borse, Dustin Bruyere, Evan Gravenor, Jason Gardiner, Connor Cleverley, Jake Heisinger, and Dylan Kelly all got on the scoresheet.

Dustin Pearson also had a strong game with 3 helpers, and Paul Bonar added a pair of assists as well.

With the win the Blues also snapped out of a 6 game losing streak, as they headed back to the MTS Ice Plex for a tilt with Steinbach on Sunday night.

But again, another night, another hot goalie stumped the Blues.

Winnipeg have been getting a lot of shots on net in recent games, but have ran into some hot netminders.  And Sunday night it was Addison Herosian and the Steinbach Pistons turn to slam the door shut.

Herosian stopped 51 of the 54 shots the Blues fired at him, leading the Pistons to a 6-3 win.

The Blues opened the scoring in the first period, with Evan Gravenor netting his 12th of the year.

Steinbach would tie it midway through the period as the teams went to the rooms tied at 1.

Both clubs would exchange second period goals, with Ben Morgan putting home his 4th for Winnipeg, and Tanner Harms notching his 8th.

In the third the Pistons special teams would blow the game wide open, as they potted a pair of powerplay goals and a shorthanded marker plus one even strength tally in a 4 goal third period.

Adam Stoykewych scored the lone goal for the Blues in the third, who outshot the Pistons 54-35 on the night, and once again came up short, falling to Steinbach 6-3.

So the Blues record now sits at 6-13-2-4 on the year, 5th in the Addison, two points ahead of the Pistons.

Next action for the Blues is Tuesday night when they hop on the bus and head to Neepawa to face the 14-5-0-2 Natives.

The Blues return to home ice on Thursday night, when the Selkirk Steelers come to the Ice Plex.

Blues Acquire Minoletti and Remillard From La Ronge

Winnipeg Blues Head Coach and GM Don MacGillivray announced today that the team has acquired 1991 forward Justin Remillard, as well 1990 defenseman Justin Minoletti from the La Ronge Ice Wolves.

In exchange, the Ice Wolves receive the CHA rights to 1991 Drew McDermott.

Remillard has played in 10 games this season for the Ice Wolves, notching 3 goals, 1 assist, and 14 penalty minutes.

Minoletti is a veteran defenseman who had spent time in the MJHL with the Portage Terriers before being acquired by La Ronge.

2nd Period Woes Continue For Blues

The Selkirk Steelers handed Winnipeg their 6th straight loss last night, downing the Blues 5-3 at the MTS Ice Plex.

And again, it was the 2nd period where things fell apart.

The Steelers would put home four goals in the period, giving themselves a five goal cushion in which the Blues just couldn't recover.

Selkirk opened the scoring with Colan Jackson scoring on the powerplay, giving the Steelers a 1-0 lead.

The floodgates would open in the 2nd for Selkirk, beginning with Craig Scott scoring his first of 2 in the period at 4:25.  Two minutes and one second later the Steelers added to their lead with a powerplay goal from Shane Gingera, making it 3-0.

Scott made it 4-0 with another powerplay goal, and forty six seconds later the Joel Ridgeway made it 5-0, again on the powerplay, midway through the period.

Selkirk finished 4-6 with the man advantage on the night.

The Blues would finally get on the board a minute after Ridgeways goal, as Kaleb Ross would score his 2nd of the year, getting the puck behind Steeler netminder Joey Rewucki, making it 5-1 after two periods.

Winnipeg would get two more in the third, with Paul Bonar and Adam Stoykewych both finding the back of the net, but Rewucki was the difference, making 19 of his 46 saves in the final frame for the win.

With the loss, the Blues have now lost 7 in a row, and their record now falls to 5-12-2-4 on the year.  Selkirk improved their league best record to 16-5-0-3 and are first in both the Addison Division and League standings.

The Blues will head to Waywayseecappo to face the Wolverines on Saturday night, and head back home to face Steinbach Pistons on Sunday.

Blues Come Up Empty On Northern Road Trip

It was not a great weekend for the Winnipeg Blues on their northern road trip.

That old saying i went to the fights and a hockey game broke out could actually describe this weekend for the Blues.

In the two games up north, the Blues received a total of 9 fighting majors.  They were also outscored 12-4 over the 2 day trip.

On Friday night, the Blues headed to OCN to face the Blizzard.  The game ended 4-2 in favour of OCN, but the story of the game was the 2nd period, when there were five fighting majors handed out, and four players ejected from the game.

Patrick Henderson notched his 5th of the year for the Blues in the third, and Adam Stoykewych put home his 9th late in the third, but it wasn't enough as the Blues would lose their 4th straight game, 4-2.

A total of 161 penalty minutes were assessed in the game, with the Blues tallying 88 of those.

The Blues headed to Swan Valley for a game against the Sherwood Division leading Stampeders on Saturday night.

Patrick Henderson would get his 2nd in as many nights, and his 6th of the year to open the scoring, but after that the Stamps rifled off five unanswered and midway through the second period they led 5-1.

The ice once again would look like a used equipment sale as it did a night before in OCN, as a total of five more fighting majors would be handed out before the game was done, and the Stampeders handed the Blues their 5th straight loss, winning 8-2.

123 penalty minutes were handed out in this game.

In total in the 2 games up north the Blues compiled 130 penalty minutes, 9 fighting majors, and were outscored 12-4.

The Blues are now off until Thursday, when they return to the MTS Ice Plex to face the Addison Division leading Selkirk Steelers.

The Steelers are 13-4-0-3 so far this season, and have won all 3 meetings between the 2 clubs this season.  Two in a shootout, and one in overtime.

Puck drop is set for 7:30.

Winkler Tops Blues

Yet another one goal loss for the Winnipeg Blues.

The Winkler Flyers beat the Blues for the third straight time this season, squeeking out a 5-4 win in Winkler.

It's the 8th time in 20 games this year that the Blues have lost by one.

The 2 teams traded a pair of goals in the first period, with Connor Cleverly netting both for the Blues, while Chapen Leblond and Jordan Neduzak found the back of the net for the Flyers.

The scoring didn't stop in the second period, with a total of 5 pucks finding it's way behind the netminders.

Dylan Kelly gave the Blues a 3-2 lead early in the period, but Winkler came back with a vengance, scoring 3 unanswered thanks to a pair of goals from Matt Loopkey, and a single by Taylor Wells, who's goal would turn out to be the winner.

Dustin Pearson got the Blues within one late in the second, scoring his 3rd of the year, but that's as close as the Blues would come as nobody lit the lamp in the third, and Winkler skated away with a 5-4 win.

The Blues record falls to 5-9-2-1, sitting in 5th place in the Addison division, while the Flyers improve to 11-6-1-1, and sit in 2nd in the Addison.

The Blues now head north for a pair of games this weekend.    On Friday night they'll face the 10-4-1-2 OCN Blizzard, then head to Swan Valley to face the 13-7-2-0 Stampeders on Saturday night.

Next home action for the Blues is Thursday, November 11th when they'll face the Selkirk Steelers at the Ice Plex.

2nd Period Costly Again For Blues

Playing their third game in as many nights, the Blues lost their second in a row, this time 6-1 to the Neepawa Natives.

And just as it was the night before against the Saints, the second period was the turning point.

The two teams were tied at one at the end of the opening frame, with Dustin Pearson scoring his second of the year for the Blues.

But that's as close as they'd come, as the Natives exploded for 4 unanswered goals in the second, all but sealing the game up for Neepawa.

Richard Olson, Tyler Larson, Andrew Nobili, and Daniel Adams with his second of the game all found the back of the net.  Neepawa outshot Winnipeg 19-8 in the period, and 44-27 overall.

Blair Holmes rounded out the scoring in the 3rd, giving the Natives the 6-1 win in front of close to 175 fans at the MTS Ice Plex.

The Blues now have a couple days off before they hit the road for 3 games.   Next action is Tuesday, November 2nd when they'll hop on the bus to Winkler to face the Flyers in a key Addison division matchup.  The Flyers are currently sitting in 3rd, three points ahead of the 4th place Blues.

Saints Halt Blues Winning Streak.

The Winnipeg Blues couldn't make it three wins in a row, as the Winnipeg Saints scored 6 unanswered in a 6-1 win in St. Adolphe last night.

The Blues Jason Gardiner opened the scoring shorthanded with his team leading 13th goal of the season.

That's was the last time the Blues would hit the scoresheet on the night, as the Saints would bury five goals in a six minute span in the second period,  powering their way to a 6-1 win.

Brett Chartier led the way with a pair, while Brett Mencik, Chris Popel, Tyler Wiwchar, and Richard Little would all get the puck behind Charlie Pogue.

Pogue made 27 saves in the loss, dropping his record now to 2-5-1-2.

With the loss, the Blues fall to 5-7-2-4, currently sitting 4th in the Addison, 3 points behind Winkler for third.

Next action for the Blues is tonight (Friday) when they'll host the Neepawa Natives at the MTS Ice Plex.  Head to the rink early as the Blues will honor the Winnipeg Police Service tonight, and you can meet some of the officers, their mascot Copper, and pick yourself up some hockey cards and posters as well.

Puck drop is set for 7:30

Blues Double Up Stamps

The Winnipeg Blues weren't about to let this one slip away.

After losing 7 of their first 15 games this season by 1 goal, the Blues found a way to keep their lead and down Swan Valley 4-2.

Evan Gravenor continued his strong play, scoring for the third straight game to open the scoring for the Blues.   It's the 9th time this season that Gravenor has lit the lamp.

The Stampeders would even things up late in the opening frame on a goal by Dylan Reimer.

In the 2nd, Jake Heisinger found the back of the net for the first time this season, regaining the Blues lead.

Jeff Riddell would even things up midway through the period for the Stamps, but the 2-2 score was short lived as Paul Bonar notched his 5th of the season 59 seconds after the Stamps tied it.

Dylan Kelly would round out the scoring in the 3rd, putting home his 2nd of the year, giving the Blues the 4-2 win, and improving their record to 4-6-2-4, and currently sitting 5th in the Addison Division.

Charlie Pogue picked up his 2nd win of the season, improving to 2-4-1-2 on the year.

The Blues have a couple days off before their next action.   After spending the last 7 games at the MTS Ice Plex, they'll hit the road next Wednesday and head to Steinbach to face the Pistons.   It's the first of a 3 game in 3 night stretch for the Blues, who'll face the Saints in St. Adolphe on Thursday, and are back home against Neepawa on Friday night.

Puck drop is 7:30 all 3 nights.

Blues Let One Slip Away VS Steelers

Another 1 goal loss for the Blues, but this one may taste a little more bitter.

Holding a 3-2 lead late in the third, defenseman Peter Logan was called for roughing, giving the Steelers a chance to tie the game.

And the Addison Division leaders did just that, as Colan Jackson put the puck behind Charlie Pogue sending the game to overtime.

The extra frame has been less than pleasant for the Blues this season.

Overtime solved nothing, and the two clubs headed to the shootout, where once again it was Colan Jackson as the only one who'd find the back of the net, giving the Steelers a come from behind 4-3 shootout win.

The loss puts the Blues record during the extra frame this season at 2 wins, 2 overtime losses, and 4 shootout losses.

The loss spoiled a 3 point night posted by the Blues Evan Gravenor.  He notched his 8th of the year, and added two helpers, giving him 14 points on the season.

Patrick Henderson and Channing Bresianni also scored for the Blues.  It was the 2nd of the year for both.

The Blues now fall to 3-6-2-4 on the year, and sit in 5th in the Addison.

The Blues have a couple days until their next action.  On Sunday the Swan Valley Stampeders will visit the MTS Ice Plex to take on the Blues.

Early puck drop once again, as the game is scheduled to get underway at 6:30.

Roenick Speaks at Blues Annual Dinner

Oh what a night.

The Winnipeg Blues held their 29th Annual Fundraising Dinner last night with a packed house at the Canad Inns Polo Park.

And with the help of many volunteers, board members, and very generous silent auction winners the night was very much a success.

It didn't hurt that the guest speaker was one of the best and most popular NHLers of all time, someone who has never shyed away from a microphone, and someone who gave everything he had when he was on the ice.

That someone was Jeremy Roenick.

Roenick stole the show of course, with his interaction with the audience, to his message to the players, he was everything you'd expect from the future Hall of Famer.

He commented on everything from how distracting the giant picture of the Queen used to be at the old Winnipeg Arena, to his likeness of the Palomino Club, the Jets coming back, and how he feels Jonathan Toews is the best young captain in the NHL bar none.

His message to the players about challenging one another, and having a committed heart, is something that any coach, at any level would love to have a person of Roenicks stature say to their club.

Blues head coach and GM Don Macgillvray says "when players hear the message from someone else, especially someone who's played the game at such a high level and has had as much success as Roenick has had in his career, it will definitely have an impact".

Roenick may have been the guest speaker, but everyone who was at this fantastic event were the guests of honor, as the generosity from the people towards the organization showed during the Silent Auction draws, the 50/50 sales, and just the support from everyone in attendance

And a night like this couldn't go on without a ton of volunteers, and corporate sponsors who continue to support the hockey club.

Macgillvray adds "the dinner is the lifeblood of the organization, we can't survive without it, and there's so many people behind the scenes that made this event possible from selling tickets to getting auction prizes, and they're a big reason for the successful evening"

Former Winnipeg Jet Thomas Steen was in attendance, as was 3 time Stanley Cup Champion and former Manitoba Moose captain Mike Keane.

All in all the it was a fantastic evening.   Joe Aiello did a great job as the MC, the auctioneers were outstanding, the dinner was excellent,  Jeremy Roenick was Jeremy Roenick, the crowd was generous, and the Blues fundraising efforts were met and exceeded.

The Blues will now turn their attention back to the ice, where they'll get set to host the Addison Division leading Selkirk Steelers tomorrow night at the MTS Ice Plex.

It's the 3rd meeting between the two clubs this year.

The last time these teams met were the first two games of the season.   The Steelers took both games, the first one 4-3 in a shootout, and the second in overtime by the same score.

Puck drop is set for 7:30.

Blues Top Pistons In Addison Division Tilt

What a game last night at the MTS Ice Plex.

Both the Steinbach Pistons and Winnipeg Blues exchanged goals all game long, before Adam Stoykewych would score the last goal in Overtime to give the Blues a 6-5 win.

The game certainly didn't look like it would be this high scoring as the Pistons were the only ones to find the back of the net in the opening period.

Tyler Lazuruk beat Brett Martyniuk with 15 seconds left in the period.

In the 2nd the gates opened up with 5 goals between the 2 teams.

Kyle Rous scored his first of 2 powerplay goals on the night early in the 2nd giving the Pistons a two goal lead.

Dylan Kelly would get the Blues within one notching his first of the season, as well as first as a Blue, and the score was 2-1.

Chris Williamson would regain the Pistons 2 goal lead, but the Blues would answer with two of their own before the period would end.

Stoykewych got the Blues rolling with a shorthanded marker, and with 27 seconds left in the period Riley Bengston would tie things up.

In the 3rd the scoring would continue.

Russell Trudeau regained the Pistons lead just over two minutes in.

Not to be outdone, the Blues came right back and Jason Gardiner picked up his league leading 12th goal of the season, and once again the teams were knotted.

Rous would score his second powerplay goal of the game to give Steinbach the lead once again, and the Blues would again answer the call as Evan Gravenor scored his 7th of the year, sending the teams to the extra frame.

Overtime and the shootout have not been kind for the Blues so far this season with 2 overtime losses and 3 shootout losses entering the game.  But they did have a big overtime win during the showcase against Portage Terriers the last time they were in overtime.

And they once again found a way to win as Stoykewych picked up his 2nd of the night and 6th of the season to improve the Blues record to 3-6-2-3 while the Pistons fall to 4-6-2-0.

Next action for the Blues is next Thursday when they'll host the Selkirk Steelers at the Ice Plex.

The Blues annual Dinner is coming up next Tuesday at Canad Inns Polo Park.  Guest Speaker is Jeremy Roenick.  Tickets are just 195 bucks and you know it's going to be a fantastic night.

OCN Doubles Up Blues

Playing their third games in 3 days, the OCN Blizzard and Winnipeg Blues hooked up at the MTS Ice Plex in front of 175 fans on Sunday night.

And the Blizzard ended up skating away with a 4-2 win.

The Blues opened the scoring on the powerplay with Andrew Hewitt putting home his fourth of the season, and Winnipeg had the lead after the first period.

In the 2nd tempers would flare, as Dustin Bruyere and Dennis Restoule went head to head in a scrap.

Midway through the period Patrick Henderson would give the Blues a 2 goal lead, again on the powerplay.  Hewitt picked up an assist.

The Blizzard would get within one as Restoule would put the puck behind Brett Martyniuk on the powerplay.

It stayed that way until the third when Restoule would pick up his second of the game again on the powerplay, and even things up at 2.

And with less than 5 minutes to go Restoule would pick up the Gordie Howe hattrick as he set up T.J Constant, again on the powerplay, and the Blizzard would take the lead for the first time in the game.

And just over a minute later OCN would ice it when Spencer Brennan slipped the puck past Martyniuk, giving the Blizzard a 4-2 win, and keeping them undefeated in regulation this season (8-0-0-1)

The Blues have a few days off now until they're next action.   On Thursday night, the Blues will welcome the Steinbach Pistons to the Ice Plex.

Puck Drop is set for 7:30.

Blues Earn Point Against Dauphin

The Winnipeg Blues once again played the defending MJHL Champions tough, but came up just short as the Dauphin Kings slipped by the Blues 5-4 in a shootout on Saturday night to wrap up MJHL Showcase Weekend.

Evan Gravenor had a strong game for the Blues, notching his 5th and 6th goals of the season in the loss.   Jeff Borse added his second of the year, and Channing Bresianni scored his first.

For the Kings it was Chris Daniels with a pair, Josh Daley, and Bryn Chyzyk all lighting the lamp.

Daniels was the only shooter able to find the back of the net during the shootout for either club.

Charlie Pogue stopped 24 shots in the loss, while Dauphins Brett Willows made 21 saves.

So the Blues wrap up Showcase Weekend at the MTS Ice Plex with 3 out of a possible 4 points.

The Blues are right back at it again tonight (Sunday) at the Ice Plex, when they'll face the 7-0-0-1 OCN Blizzard.

Again, note the early start time, as puck drop is set for 6:30.

Bonar and Blues Drop Terriers In OT

Just when it looked like the Winnipeg Blues would take another 1 goal loss, they found a way to win.

Paul Bonar completed his hat-trick in overtime with a shot from the point that found it's way behind Terrier netminder Kirk Coswell, and the Blues won their first game of the showcase weekend 4-3.

The score was 2-1 Terriers after the first, with all 3 goals scored on the powerplay.

The 2nd was the Blues best period, but they couldn't find the back of the net even though they outshot the Terriers 18-6 in the period.

In the 3rd, the Blues tied it on a point shot by Bonar that hit a stick and bounced over Coswell to even things up.

The lead was short lived after Shaq Merasty made a great pass across to Brendan Harms who had a tap in to give the Terriers a 3-2 lead.

The Blues had many chances to tie the game, but hit a post and a crossbar, and it once again looked like it wasn't going to be the Blues night.

With just under 2 minutes to go, Evan Gravenor was called for hooking.  But the Terrier powerplay lasted just 8 seconds before Andrew Wiebe was also called for the same thing.

The teams seemed poised to play 4 on 4 for the remainder of the game, but with 18 seconds left Adam Robson took a tripping penalty, giving the Blues a short powerplay.

With Martyniuk on the bench, the Blues threw everything at the net, and with three seconds left Andrew Hewitt picked up the puck through the scramble and roofed it, notching the game at 3.

The Blues would begin overtime with the man advantage, and kept the Terriers locked in their own zone and after three very nice glove saves by Coswell, Bonar would end it with a shot from the point that Coswell couldn't see, and the Blues skated away with their second win of the season 4-3.

The win improves the Blues record to 2-5-2-2, while the Terriers fall to 5-3-2-0.

Next action for the Blues is Saturday night when they'll face the 5-4-1-0 Dauphin Kings.

Puck drop is set for 7:00 at the MTS Ice Plex.

Blues Make Some Moves

Showcase weekend kicked off tonight at the MTS Ice Plex, with the Portage Terriers beating Neepawa 2-1 in a shoot out.

There was also some action off the ice, as the Winnipeg Blues made a couple of trades.

The Blues acquired defenceman Ryan Breen (1992) from Waywayseecappo for future considerations.  Breen has no points and two penalty minutes in 2 games this season with the Wolverines.

As well, the Blues traded Colin Mospanchuk (1993) to the Portage Terriers.  In return, the Blues acquire 1991 forward Dylan Kelly.   Kelly suited up for 6 games this season with the Terriers, notching 2 assists and 12 penalty minutes.

And it won't take long for those 2 players to face their former teams, as the two teams meet tonight (Friday) at 7:00 at the Ice Plex.

It's a great weekend for hockey lovers who can come down to the Ice Plex and see every team in the MJHL battling it out during the 3 day long showcase.

Action kicks off at 3pm.

Wolverines Slip By Blues

It wasn't the way the Blues wanted to come back after a spirited win in Dauphin, and the Waywayseecappo Wolverines won their first ever game at the MTS Ice Plex, by downing the Blues 4-3.

Any time you have to kill off 10 penalties in a game, it's not a good thing, and the Wolverines capitalized 3 times with the extra man.

Jason Gardiner continued to put the puck in the net for the Blues adding a pair in the loss.  He now takes over the league lead with 11 goals in nine games.

Andrew Hewitt notched his 2nd of the year.

For the Wolverines, Ryan Duhaime, Braeden Raiwet, Paul Van De Velde, and Shane Goodrunning all found the back of the net.  Van De Velde also added a pair of assists for a 3 point night.

Charlie Pogue stopped 20 of 24 shots in the loss, while Brett Gagnon made 18 saves for the win.

The Blues now have 5 days off before the Showcase Weekend which will take place next weekend (October 7-9) at the MTS Ice Plex.

The Blues will face Portage on Friday night, puck drop set for 7:00.    On Saturday, they'll face the Dauphin Kings.  Again, puck drop goes at 7:00.

Blues Impressive In Dauphin

It's been a long time coming, but the Winnipeg Blues finally have their first win of the season.    And what makes it even more impressive is the fact they did it on the road against the defending MJHL Champion Dauphin Kings in front of an announced crowd of 1233.

A four goal outburst in the third spurred the Blues to a 7-3 win.

Jason Gardiner opened the scoring just over 5 minutes in for the Blues, notching his 9th of the season..

Tyler Gaudry replied for the Kings and the 2 teams were tied after the opening period.

In the second, Adam Stoykewych scored his first of two short handed markers in the game, beating Kings netminder Brett Willows to give the Blues the lead.

Ben Morgan would make it 3-1 on the powerplay at 14:22 with his second of the year.

The Kings would get within one late in the period when Chris Daniels put the puck behind Charlie Pogue, but the Blues would head to the dressing room with a 3-2 lead.

In the 3rd, Morgan scored his second of the game just 34 seconds in and the Blues didn't look back.

Evan Gravenor notched 2 goals in the third, and Stoykewych added his second short handed goal of the game, an empty netter, and the Blues skated away with an impressive 7-3 win.

Pogue made 27 saves for his first win of the season.

The win improves the Blues record to 1-4-2-2 after 9 games.

Next action for the Blues is this Sunday, October 3rd, when they'll welcome the Waywayseecappo Wolverines to the MTS Ice Plex for the first time.

Note the early start time, as puck drop is set for 6:30.

Saints Down Blues

The rough start to the Blues season got a little rougher last night as the Winnipeg Saints downed the Blues 6-0 in front of 225 fans at the MTS Ice Plex.

It was the Blues second straight loss to the Saints, and 8th in a row overall.

The Saints struck early in the first, as the teams played a little four on four.  Paul Crane would snipe a shot past Blues goaltender Brett Martyniuk to open the scoring.

Four minutes later Cole Pruden would make it 2-0.  That was his first of 4 points on the night.

In the second, a period where the Blues needed to score first, it was the Saints who would strike early.   Pruden would notch his second of the game on a nice pass from Kyle Bodnaruk, and it was 3-0.

The Blues would have their chance to get back into the game midway through the period when Kyle Stephenson would get a checking from behind penalty, unsportsmanlike, and a game misconduct.  On the ensuing 4 minute powerplay, the Blues couldn't get the puck behind Saints netminder Michael Deslauriers, who was stellar all night.

The Saints killed that off then went to the powerplay themselves, and they'd capitalize when Tim Hayduk's shot from the point took a deflection and ended up on Richard Little's stick in front of the net.   Little had a tap in, and the Saints were up 4-0 after two periods.

In the third, much the same for the Blues.  They created a few chances, but just couldn't put the puck in the net.  Midway through the third Shane Gingera found the puck on his stick about 6 feet in front of Martyniuk, and he made no mistake putting a shot just under the bar making it 5-0.

Jordan Davies would round out the scoring for the Saints after he was left alone in the slot, and fired a beautiful shot over the right arm of Martyniuk.

6-0 Saints.

The Blues now fall to 0-4-2-2 (4pts) on the season and are desperately looking to get into the win column.  There next chance to do so is tonight (Friday), when they head to Credit Union Place in Dauphin to take on the 4-2-1-0 (9pts) Kings.

Blues Struggles Continue

The first 7 games are in the books, and the Blues are still looking for their first win.   The Blues fell to the Winnipeg Saints 4-1 last night in St. Adolphe.

After a scoreless but penalty filled first period, the Saints tallied three goals in the 2nd.  Paul Crane, Kyle Bodnaruk, Shane Gingera were the goal scorers for the Saints.

Brad Olynyk would add a powerplay goal late in the 3rd to round out the scoring for the Saints.

Dustin Bruyere would notch the Blues only marker early in the 3rd, but Saints netminder Brent Wolfe would shut the door the rest of the way, stopping 31 of 32 shots for the win.

Charlie Poque made 25 saves in a losing cause for the Blues.

The Blues now fall to 0-3-2-2 after 7 games.

These 2 teams will go head to head once again this Thursday night at the MTS Ice Plex.  Puck Drop is set for 7:30.

Elsewhere last night the Portage doubled up Neepawa 6-3.

Blues Still Looking For Elusive First Win

Overtime and shootouts continue to be the Blues nemisis, as they once again went to the extra frame and came away with only a single point.

Connor Stephenson scored his first of the season, Adam Stoykewych notched his second of the year, and Jason Gardiner continued to find the back of the net for the Blues, scoring his 6th and 7th goals of the year to take over the lead league.  Gardiner has one more than Winklers Matt Loopkey.

Angus Klassen added a hat trick for the Kings, who now improve to 4-1-0-0 on the year.  The Blues fall to 0-1-2-2, and are still looking for that elusive first win.

They'll have a chance tonight when they head to Winkler to face the 2-1-0-0 Flyers.  The Flyers beat the Blues 7-6 in overtime last Tuesday night at the MTS Ice Plex in the only other meeting between the 2 clubs this season.

Puck drop is set for 7:30 tonight.

Terriers Blank Blues

Well, it wasn't pretty for the Winnipeg Blues last night at the MTS Ice Plex.

The Portage Terriers came into the new Blues home and made themselves very welcome by shutting out Winnipeg 7-0.

Terriers Brent Wold opened the scoring on the powerplay 5:47 into the first knocking in a loose puck behind Blues netminder Charlie Pogue.

It stayed that way until late in the period as Josh Dufresne snuck in from the point, took a nice feed from Cole Brunet and one timed a shot into the top corner with just 2 seconds left, giving the Terriers a two goal lead after 1.

In the 2nd, the Terriers once again scored early, this time 1:02 in, as Dylan Kelly and Cody Kostecki broke in on a 2 on 1.   Kelly made a nice pass to Kostecki who made no mistake about it and the Terriers were up by three.

Midway through the period a scramble in front of the Blues net saw Pogue come up with a couple of nice saves, but Cory More would pick up a rebound and fire a shot into the open cage, making it 4-0 for the visitors.

The Terriers didn't let up in the third, and again scored early.  Stephane Pattyn and Cole Brunet skated in 2 on 1, and Pattyn would keep the puck and fire a wrist shot past Pogue to increase their lead to 5-0.

The Blues did have their chances to score, but it seemed that it just wasn't their night.   Patrick Henderson may have had the best chance, as Terrier goalie Jason Kasdorf was down and out, and the puck was sitting on the blue paint in the crease.  Henderson got his stick to it, but Kasdorf stuck his big mitt out and snatched a sure goal away from Henderson.

The Terriers would add 2 more goals and leave with a 7-0 win, and Jason Kasdorf stopped all 22 shots he faced for his first shutout of the season.

That's the type of night it was for the Blues.   The Terriers capitalized on a lot of their chances, while the Blues couldn't find the back of the net with theirs.

It doesn't get any easier for Winnipeg, as they'll welcome last year's MJHL and Anavet Cup Champion Dauphin Kings to the Ice Plex on Saturday.   Puck drop is set for 7:30.

Dauphin currently sits undefeated at 3-0-0-0 (6pts) , while the Blues are 0-1-2-1 (3pts)

Flyers Edge Blues in OT

For the third straight game, the Blues headed to the extra frame, but once again gained only a point as the Flyers won the game 7-6 in overtime.

The Blues came out flying once again in the opening period, and were rewarded midway through when Jason Gardiner and Ben Morgan broke in 2 on 1.   Morgan slid a nice feed over to Gardiner who calmly sent the puck under the crossbar giving the Blues a 1-0 lead.

Mike Wilgosh would tie it for the Flyers on the powerplay with 1:35 left in the first period, but the Blues would answer right back with their own powerplay goal.  Paul Bonar let a shot go from the point that hit a Winkler stick and eluded Flyer netminder Peter Alexander.  And the Blues lead the Flyers 2-1 after the opening frame.

In the 2nd the Flyers would once again tie the game on a powerplay as Jory Mullin was able to have three free whacks at the puck beside the Blues net and finally put the 4th past Blues goalie Brett Martyniuk to even things up at two.

The Blues would answer quickly yet again.  With a delayed penalty coming up to the Flyers and the extra man on the ice, Evan Gravenor fed a nice cross ice pass to Peter Logan who put the puck past Alexander to restore the Blues lead.

The back and forth affair would continue a couple minutes later when Daniel Fainman skated into the Blues zone, dropped the puck to Kyle Wells in the slot who let a nice wristshot go that beat Martyniuk and the game was knotted at 3.

Winkler would take the lead for the first time in the hockey game midway through the period as Matt Loopkey let a shot go that deflected off a Blues stick and found it's way behind Martyinuk to give the Flyers a 4-3 lead after 2.

The Blues would tie the game early in the 3rd as Dustin Bruyere sent a pass looking for Adam Stoykewych who was streaking to the Flyers net.  Winkler goalie Alexander got his stick on the pass, but it deflected up and hit Stoykewych and bounced in the net, tying the game at four.

Midway through the third Evan Gravenor would score a beauty.   Gravenor picked up the puck just outside the Flyers blue line with speed.  He then split the two Flyer defencemen, and while falling down managed to put the puck up and over Alexander to give the Blues the lead once again.

The game was far from over though, and just over 3 minutes later Mike Riffell let a shot go from the point, and once again it hit a stick, and managed to find it's way through a maze of players and into the back of the Blues net.  5-5.

With under three minutes to go, Winkler decided it was their turn to take the lead again, and Blair Osiowy fired a slapshot from just inside the blue line and gave the Flyers a 6-5 lead.

It stayed that way until late in the third.  With Martyniuk on the bench for an extra attacker, the Blues swarmed the Flyer net and the puck ended up on the stick of Gardiner who knocked home the loose puck with 29 seconds left,  and the Blues were heading to the extra frame for the third time in 3 games.

The game looked like it was destined for a shootout when the Flyers stole the puck at the Blues line, broke in 2 on 1, and Chapen LeBlond ended it for the Flyers.

Final score 7-6 Flyers.

Next action for the Blues is Thursday night when the Portage Terriers come to town.   Puck drop is set for 7:30.

Winnipeg Blues: The Week That Was / The Week Ahead

The Week That Was

Well the Blues officially opened up their regular season this past week, when the puck dropped on Friday night in front of over a thousand fans at the MTS Ice Plex.   The Selkirk Steelers took the game 4-3 in a shoot out, but to everyone in attendance, the talk was about the new facility, the new season, and calibre of the players in the MJHL.

One night later, the Blues and Steelers played game 2 of their home and home series in Selkirk, and once again the score ended 4-3 for Steelers.  It took overtime this time, but both teams put on a show for the fans on the opening weekend of the 2010/11 MJHL season.

The Week Ahead

A busy week for the Blues, who have 4 games this week, including 3 on home ice.   On Tuesday the Blues welcome the Winkler Flyers for their first visit to the Ice Plex.   Thursday the Portage Terriers come to town.  Saturday will see the Blues face the defending MJHL Champion Dauphin Kings for the first time this season, and on Sunday the Blues hit the road and head to Winkler to face the Flyers.

Puck drops at 7:30 for all games this week.

Blues Fall To Steelers in OT

For the second straight night, the Blues and Steelers needed extra time to decide a winner.  And for the second straight night, it was the Steelers who came away with the win.

Colan Jackson put home the winner on the powerplay, 1:55 into the extra frame to improve the Steelers record to 2-0-0-0.   The Blues fall to 0-0-1-1 after the opening weekend.

Evan Gravenor, Andrew Hewitt, and Jeff Borse all notched their first goals of the year in a losing cause.

Next action for the Blues goes this Tuesday night back at the MTS Ice Plex against the Winkler Flyers.

Puck Drop is set for 7:30.

Blues Opening Night Success Despite Loss

The Winnipeg Blues had what was one of their best Home Openers in recent years this past Friday, September 17th.

Althought the Blues lost in a shoot out to their division rivals the Selkirk Steelers (to see the game summary click here) http://www.mjhlhockey.ca/gamesummary.aspx?game_id=2081 , the over one thousand fans that packed the new Blues home at the MTS Ice Plex saw a fantastic hockey game, and the atmosphere inside the building was electric.  Selkirk may have won the game, but everyone in attendance was buzzing about the great hockey, the new facility, and the excitement of starting a brand new MJHL season.

There was also a VIP reception at the end of the night, which included, players  parents, Blues Directors, Corporate Sponsors, and various dignitaries including Mark Chipman, who dropped the puck for the ceremonial opening face off.   It was a very fitting way to kick off not only a new season for the Winnipeg Blues, but a whole new era in their new home at the Ice Plex.

Next home action for the Blues (0-0-1-1) is this Tuesday, September 21st when they'll face the Winkler Flyers.  Puck drop is set for 7:30.

Steelers Spoil Blues Home Opener

Jason Gardiner had an opening night to remember, but it wasn't enough as the Blues fell to the Selkirk Steelers 4-3 in a shootout.

Gardiner tallied all 3 goals for the Blues in front of a large crowd at the MTS Ice Plex.

The Blues came out flying in the first period, and at the midway point of the first were outshooting the Steelers 10-3, but couldn't get the puck behind Steeler netminder Joey Rewucki, who made several key saves in the early going to keep his team in the game.

Finally at 14:40 of the first, Gardiner notched his first with a backhand over the left shoulder of Rewucki, and gave the Blues a 1-0 lead.

Gardiner would get his second with 1:27 to go in the period to give the Blues a two goal lead heading into the dressing room.

In the second it was the Steelers turn to come out flying, and 1:13 in they got on the scoreboard as Derek Gingera deflected home a shot from the point, and the Steelers were within one.

Less than two minutes later Gardiner would complete the hatrick, this time with a delayed penalty coming up to the Steelers.    Gardiner went outside on the defender, and fired a backhand that found it's way behind Rewucki, and the Blues had their 2 goal lead once again.

The Steelers thought they'd come within a goal once again midway through the period, as a shot from the point took a funny deflection, went high in the air, and found it's way in the back of the net.  But the goal was disallowed because Blues goalie Brett Martyniuk was interfered with by Gingera.   Gingera ended up disputing the call, and in the process took a 10 minute misconduct, and was ejected from the game.

The Steelers would get within one before the period was out, as Micheal Hay took a nice pass from Tyler Grove at the side of the net, and had nothing but daylight as he fired his shot behind Martyniuk making the score 3-2 after two periods.

In the third the Blues found themselves 2 men down, and the Steelers made them pay as Colan Jackson fired a slapshot from the point that beat Martyniuk, tying the game at 3.

It stayed that way through the period and into overtime.  With less than 2 minutes to go in OT, Ben Morgan got called for hooking, and the Steelers had a 4 on 3 powerplay for the remainder of overtime, but the Blues penalty killers did a great job sending the game to a shoot out.

In the shootout, Blues Andrew Emmons and Jason Gardiner both were foiled by Rewucki, while Colan Jackson and Jory Geddes both found the back of the net for the Steelers, giving them a 4-3 win to open up the season.

These 2 teams will face off against each other again tonight (Saturday) this time in Selkirk.  Puck drop is set for 7:30.

Blues Wrap Up Pre Season With A Win

The Blues hit the ice for their final pre season game this afternoon in front of close to 200 fans at the MTS Ice Plex, and left the ice with a 4-1 win over the Fort William North Stars (SIJHL).

Dustin Bruyere continued on from his 2 goal performance a night earlier, and added one more in the win.

As well newcomer Paul Bonar, who the Blues acquired from Yorkton to complete the futures deal for Troy Smukowich, added a single, as did David Laflechu.

Now the Blues can focus on getting ready for the regular season which opens up this Friday night at home against the Selkirk Steelers.

Puck Drop is set for 7:30 at the MTS Ice Plex.

Blues vs Pistons ROUND 2

For the 2nd time in as many nights, the Blues and Steinbach Pistons faced off against each other in exhibition action.

And for the 2nd time in as many nights, the two clubs would go to the extra frame.

The Pistons opened the scoring in front of their home crowd as Mitch Chagnon beat Blues tender Charlie Poque.

It looked like it would stay that way until the end of the period, but Andrew Emmons tied the game with 8 seconds left in the period to send the teams to the dressing rooms locked at 1.

The Blues would take the lead thirteen minutes into the 2nd as Dustin Bruyere fired a shot past Pistons goaltender Addison Herosian, giving the Blues a 2-1 lead.

Tyler Lazuruk tied it for the Pistons shorthanded late in the 2nd, and once again the game was tied heading into the final frame.

In the 3rd, Tanner Harms scored his second in as many nights giving the Pistons a 3-2 lead.   With just under 5 minutes to go Dustin Bruyere would add his second of the game, and send this game to overtime tied at three for the second straight night.

Again, some chances at both ends during the 4 on 4 OT, but with a 1:10 left on the clock,  Trent Genyk would end it, giving the Pistons a 4-3 win.

Dustin Bruyere had a pair of goals, while Jeff Borse and David Laflechu each had a pair of helpers in the game for the Blues.

The Blues next action is today (Sunday) at 2:00 at the MTS Ice Plex where they'll face the Fort William North Stars (SIJHL).

It's the final Pre Season game for the Blues before opening up the regular season next Friday night at home against the Selkirk Steelers.

Blues vs Pistons

Exhibition game number 6 for the Winnipeg Blues went down last night at the MTS Ice Plex.  And for the second straight game, the game ended in a tie.

The Blues got off to a great start, when Jeff Borse put a nice shot over the left shoulder of Pistons netminder Brenden Edie to open the scoring just under 5 minutes into the first.

The Pistons would tie it midway through the first when Brett Fargher went five hole on Blues goalie Tyler Denchuk, and knotted the game at 1.

It would stay that way until the 2nd, and the Blues struck early.  Nineteen seconds in to be exact, Patrick Henderson slipped one past Edie, to get the lead back for the Blues.

Ben Morgan would give the Blues a 2 goal cushion five minutes later on the powerplay, tapping home a rebound as Winnipeg wrapped up a two man advantage, and the Blues would head into the third with a 3-1 lead.

The Pistons had a strong third period, and just under 7 minutes in, 1994 defenceman Stefan Hak (Who i personally thought had a very solid game) would get Steinbach within one after his shot from the point hit a body and found it's way behind goaltender Isaiah Plett, who came in midway through the 2nd period.

Midway through the 3rd, the Pistons would tie it as Tanner Harms would bulge the twine, and once again, the Blues would be heading to overtime.

Overtime was fast, exciting, and had chances at both ends.  I don't believe there was a whistle for the entire 5 minutes.   The best chance of overtime went to Conor Stephenson who was sent in alone and beat netminder Bryan Tait, but rang it off the crossbar.

Next action for the Blues is tonight (Saturday) when they'll travel to Steinbach to once again face the Pistons.  Puck drop is set for 7:30.

Nothing Decided between Blues and Terriers

The Blues finally played someone other than the Saints and Steelers.

In their 5th exhibition game of the pre season, the Blues met up with the Portage Terriers at the MTS Ice Plex.

And the coaches of both teams sure had a good look at their special teams last night.  The penalty box door could have stayed open throughout the night it seemed, as both teams took their share of penalties.

Portage opened the scoring just over 5 minutes in on a 2 man advantage.

The Blues, not to be outdone, scored on their own 5 on 3 power play to even things up at one.

1:15 later the Blues would take the lead, also on the power play and before the period was done, they'd add a third, and went to the dressing room up by 2.

The Terriers would cut the lead to one only 1:28 seconds into the second on a nice deflection by Riley Hay, but the Blues would regain their 2 goal lead less than a minute later.

The Terriers would add one before the period was over, and the Blues would begin the third with a 4-3 lead.

The Terriers, who'd scored first in each of the first 2 periods continued that trend in the third, tying the game 3:50 in.

But it only took the Blues 23 seconds to regain their lead on a delayed penalty call to once again hop in the driver seat.

The see-saw battle would continue as Paul Zysco fired a slapshot from the half wall and tied the game for the Terriers.

Overtime would solve nothing, and the game would end 5-5.

The Blues record now sits at 2 wins, 1 loss, and 2 ties after 5 pre season games.

Next action for the Blues is this coming Friday night when they'll welcome the Steinbach Pistons to the Ice Plex.  Puck Drop is set for 7:30.

The Week That Was

Two nights later the Blues hosted Selkirk, and downed the Steelers 9-2.

The Blues renewed aquaintances with the Saints on the 3rd and scored four unanswered in the 2nd period, and eventually took the game in a shootout with a 5-4 win.

They wrapped up the week's schedule in Selkirk on Sunday night with a 2-2 tie.

Long Weekend Over, Next Vacation in 8 Months

Well, the September Long Weekend has come and gone, and with that means it's time for hockey.  It's the last official break for me during the hockey season, and as much as i love getting away on the long weekends, in a way i couldn't wait for it to be done so it can be non stop hockey for the next 7-8 months.

The Blues have 4 more exhibition games before opening up their season on September 17th at home against Selkirk.

The remaining games look like this.

September 7th Portage Terriers @Winnipeg Blues   MTS Ice Plex - 7:30

September 10th Steinbach Pistons @ Winnipeg Blues   MTS Iceplex - 7:30

September 11th Winnipeg Blues @ Steinbach Pistons       Steinbach - 7:30

Blues vs Saints Exhibition

In the first game action for the 2 clubs this pre season, the Blues and Saints squared off at the MTS Iceplex before a pretty good crowd.

The Blues came out with their first shift banging anything with skates on, but the Saints were the ones who struck first on the scoreboard just 2 minutes in when Matt Hannibal tee'd one up from the point and found it's way under the arm of Blues netminder Benn Plitt to open the scoring.

The Blues answered with a pretty 2 on 1 midway through the first when Liam Bilton fed a perfect pass to Tarren Jones who made no mistake and tied the game up at one.

That was short lived as Shane Gingera would get his first of 3 on the night just 21 seconds later, and the Saints would begin to run away with it after that.

Three goals in 1:25 second span of the second put the Saints up 6-1, and when the smoke cleared at the end of the night, the Saints skated away with a 10-2 win.

Both teams used 3 different goalies in the game, all playing a period.

These 2 teams will meet again on Friday night.

Next action for the Blues is this coming Thursday when they'll welcome the Selkirk Steelers.  Puck drop is set for 7:30.

In other exhibition action, the Dauphin Kings beat Swan Valley 5-2.

Winnipeg Blues: The Week That Was and The Week Ahead

Every Monday i will be letting you know what's coming up for the Blues in the upcoming week, and what happened in the previous week.

The Week That Was

The Blues opened up their Rookie Camp just over a week ago, and then went to work on their regular camp which opened up this past Saturday.

Close to 70 players came out vying for a spot on the Blues roster for the 2010/11 season.   By Monday, the player count had been reduced to around 50.

The Week Ahead

The Blues coaching staff will continue to make decisions as to who will be suiting up for the team when the regular season opens up on September 17th.

The Pre Season schedule kicks off Tuesday for the Blues, when they'll welcome the Winnipeg Saints.  It'll be the first meeting between the 2 clubs since the Saints swept the Blues in in the first round of last season's playoffs.

Then on Thursday the Selkirk Steelers visit the Iceplex for the first time, as they visit the Blues.

On Friday the Blues once again lace it up against the Saints.

And on Sunday, the Steelers and Blues renew aquaintances for the 4th exhibition game of the week, this time in Selkirk.

That's the week ahead for the Blues.

Blues Camp Day 3

Day 3 of Blues camp was quite a bit more intense than days 1 and 2.   Five scraps in the morning session set the tone for the day as the players continued to try and impress the Blues coaching staff.

Head Coach Don Macgillvray really liked the competitveness of Day 3 compared to days 1 and 2.

"As soon as guys start seeing other guys being sent home, it kind of sends the message throughout the dressing room that the time is now to show what they've got"  says Macgillvray.

The camp started on Saturday with close to 70 guys, and was pared down to close to 50 by the time Day 3 rolled around.

And with only 11 returning players, there are still many spots available.

Macgillvray adds that they're keeping things in perspective and know that when they hit the ice tomorrow night for their first exhibition action against the Winnipeg Saints, they'll have a few more answers.

The Blues also announced that they've completed a 3 way deal that sent Troy Smukowich to the Yorkton Terriers at last seasons trade deadline for future considerations.

The Blues traded those futures to Swan Valley, then the Stamps sent 1991 defenseman Paul Bonar to the Terriers, who then sent Bonar to the Blues to complete the futures deal.   The Stampeders then acquired forward Clark Byczynski from the Terriers.

Bonar had 9 goals and 30 assists in 55 games for the Stamps last season, with 6 of his 9 goals, and 20 of his 39 points coming on the power play.

Again, don't forget to head out to the MTS Iceplex Tuesday night to see the Blues face off against the Winnipeg Saints in their first pre season action.

Puck drop is set for 7:30.
